Grazing

Uncategorized Jul 27, 2022

One diet that has grown in popularity over the years, and one you're probably familiar with, is "grazing". Grazing consists of unstructured small meals throughout the day, as opposed to eating fewer, fuller meals (i.e. breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Grazing has become popular for a few reasons, namely due to its unstructured nature allowing those with "not enough time" to avoid planning for a full meal. It also allows dieters to avoid eating a meal that may leave them feeling full and sluggish.

Grazing does have its benefits, namely keeping blood sugar and insulin levels more stable throughout the day and allowing for smoother digestion. In theory, it can also limit portion control issues. However, grazing does have many drawbacks as well.

The most common issue with grazing is that it creates poor nutritional habits. Grazing, by definition, does not take into account the body's natural cycle of hunger. By not listening to the signals your body is sending you, you can...

Piriformis Stretch

Uncategorized Jul 13, 2022

If you're feeling low back or leg pain, there's a good chance it's in some way connected to your piriformis.

This smaller muscle connected to your sacrum and femur can tighten up very easily in a sedentary lifestyle.

So if you have an office job where you're sitting long ours or spending a lot of time driving, for example, this muscle is probably tight and needs to be stretched.

The figure 4 stretch is great for specifically relieving the piriformis, and feels awesome as well! Give it a try for 30-60s on each leg. I like to start my morning with this stretch to feel loose as I go about my day!

The 80/20 Method

Uncategorized Jul 08, 2022

If you've ever started a diet and found yourself "falling off the wagon" after just a couple weeks, one of the biggest reasons is that conventional thinking, especially with fad diets, is that you have to be perfect all the time.

That way of thinking just isn't realistic, and often leads to failure. In reality, we aren't perfect. Vacations, holidays, social plans, and just life in general can be an obstacle to eating healthier. However, the 80/20 method plans for this.

This method helps both psychologically and physiologically.

Mentally, it gives you room to enjoy yourself. By accepting that you won't be perfect, and aiming instead for the goal of 80% healthy, 20% other, you give yourself room to take life's challenges in stride. That way when you have a big trip coming up, you're thinking about which SPF of sunscreen to use and not worrying about making sure you have a perfect diet.

Physiologically, your body is most likely used to the sugar and flavors of...

Self Care Habits

Uncategorized Jul 01, 2022

What comes to mind when you hear "self care"? Maybe you thought of a glass of wine, comfort food, or something else that's only used if you've had a tough day and need a little boost. Self care doesn't have to be a one-time activity, or something you feel you have to rationalize as "I've had a tough day, I deserve this". Sometimes that's needed, but what self care really should be is activities built into your daily routine that fuel your body and keep you in a healthy state of mind. Here's some healthy self care habits you can use daily!

"Eating Back" Calories

Uncategorized Jun 30, 2022

While calorie tracking apps are a very useful invention that can help you lose weight and keep track of your nutritional intake, they can also make mistakes that will end up setting you back.

Weight loss/gain, when boiled down to its most basic form, is the equation of calories in vs. calories out. There's 3,500 calories in a pound, so if your goals is to lose 1lb a week you need to burn 3,500 more calories in that timeframe than you consume through food. This is called a caloric defecit.

Many of these trackers have a "net calorie" function. What this does is take your total daily caloric allowance, and add any calories burned due to exercise onto that number. This function allows you to "eat back" your calories burned, theoretically keeping you below your alloted number needed to lose weight.

For example if you're allowed 2,000 calories in a day, but lift weights for 30min and input that into your app, it may say that since you burned 200 calories in that 30min you can...
