Water does what for my breath?

health hydration nutrition Aug 20, 2019

Water makes up almost 60% of the human body; it is one of the most important things we take into our body. Water not only carries vital nutrients, but also helps with nearly all body functions, including digestion and brain activity. It’s been shown to also increase metabolism.

What health problems happen to me when I don’t drink enough water? Without proper hydration, your body becomes dehydrated, which leads to many health issues such as, tiredness, exhaustion, headaches, depression, high blood pressure, obesity, kidney stones and other issues, even diabetes and heart disease. And…your breath can stink!  That's right, dehydration decreases saliva, which allows bacteria that cause bad breath to thrive.

When we work out, our bodies need more water. If you don’t have enough, you will feel a reduced amount of energy, shortness of breath, muscle cramping, dizziness, and even sick to the stomach. Having a dry mouth or early fatigue during a workout? You need more hydration.

How much should I be drinking?

  • On average, most individuals should be shooting for about ½ of their body weight in ounces (or 8-10 glasses a day). When it’s hot, dry, or you are working out, drink more.
  • Reduce intake in drinks with sugar, artificial sweeteners, caffeine.
  • Want to lose weight? A tip is to drink 15-20 oz before a meal to quell your appetite, and studies support this, having shown this has helped people lose weight.
  • As another fast tip, drinking cold water burns more calories (20-80 calories a day!), since it takes energy from your body to warm the water.  Over time, that adds up!

Drink around 20 ounces of water prior to exercises, and have at least 8 oz after the workout. With our personalized workouts, you should continue more water intake 24-48 hours after the workout, as your muscles are still working!     I can’t say it enough, drink water and STAY hydrated. Your body will thank you!
