Dave Skogen: Living the Dash with Purpose

Dave Skogen has never been interested in doing things halfway. Whether building a business, investing in people, or taking care of his health, Dave approaches life with intention, humor, and a deep sense of purpose.

Outside the studio, Dave keeps things refreshingly simple. He enjoys reading, and he’s become locally famous—at least among friends—for harvesting errant golf balls from fairway 17 of the country club near his home. Carefully packaged in egg cartons, they’re gifted to fellow “hackers” with a smile.  Beyond outdoor activities, what Dave does do is pay attention—to people, to moments, and to how he’s living the space between the dates.

That philosophy comes from the poem The Dash, which reminds us that what matters most isn’t when we’re born or when we die, but how we live in between. “Live your dash” isn’t just something Dave says—it’s how he operates.

When Dave came to NorthStar, he already exercised, but he sensed there was more available to him—more strength, more energy, more vitality. Through NorthStar’s proven method, he unlocked those deeper layers. Structured progressions, meaningful challenges, mobility and pain-pattern correction, and intentional strength development allowed Dave to build a stronger core, greater upper-body strength, improved shoulder and neck mobility, and better overall movement quality. He’s living proof that whether you’re 40, 50, 60, or beyond, when you allow yourself to be coached—rather than trying to dictate outcomes—results follow.  He's doing more push ups than most half his age.

But when asked what NorthStar has helped him with most, Dave doesn’t talk about numbers.

Instead, he points to culture.

Because of the environment created at NorthStar, each of his Northstar days over the entire year begin with positivity and purpose. He’s grateful to work not just on his body, but on his soul—surrounded by coaches and clients who care, challenge, and encourage one another. That daily rhythm has reinforced a consistent awareness of something Dave believes deeply: a healthy body and a healthy soul are inseparable.

Dave shows up ready to work. He participates in every challenge, encourages others in the studio, and models curiosity, humility, and commitment. His consistency has ripple effects across his family, his community, and the many people who rely on his leadership and example.

Dave demonstrates that NorthStar’s method doesn’t just build muscle—it creates clarity, renews purpose, and unlocks more life to live and more service to give. He still faces stress, setbacks, and frustrations like everyone else. The difference is that he leans into a process of continuous renewal of both body and mind.

And Dave would be the first to tell you he’s not finished yet.

Because, in his words, when you’re doing good, it’s a great time to do better—and to keep living your dash with intention.

Dave and his wife, Barb, have made a lasting impact on La Crosse and communities throughout Wisconsin, building Festival Foods from the ground up and investing deeply in people along the way. His generous heart and willingness to give his time, wisdom, and resources have inspired countless others.

For his physical progress, his leadership, and the positive influence he continues to have on our community, we are proud to honor Dave Skogen on the NorthStar Wall of Fame.

Congratulations, Dave!
